$782,000 in Grants for Boating Launching and Facility Improvements Approved

SACRAMENTO--The California Boating and Waterways Commission has approved $782,000 in boating launching and facility improvement grants.

The grants awarded by the Commission Oct. 24 will go toward the construction of three northern California boat launching facilities. The grant recipients are:

Miller Park Boat Launching Facility, Tomales Bay - Marin County
The Commission approved a $403,000 grant to the Marin County Department of Parks and Open Space for improvements to the Miller Park Boat Launching Facility. The project includes construction of a new restroom, fish cleaning station and a retaining wall adjacent to the restroom. This facility serves boats bound for Tomales Bay and the Pacific Ocean.

Black Point Boat Launching Facility, Petaluma River - Marin County
The Commission approved a $279,000 grant to the Marin County Department of Parks and Open Space for improvements to the Black Point Boat Launching Facility. The project includes construction of the project's secondary components: a restroom, fish cleaning station and a vehicle turn-around. The proximity to both fresh and salt water, make this recreation facility a favorite among boaters and anglers in the north bay area.

El Dorado Beach Boat Launching Facility, Lake Tahoe -- City of South Lake Tahoe
The Commission approved a $100,000 grant to the City of South Lake Tahoe for improvements to the El Dorado Beach Boat Launching Facility. The project includes reconstruction of the existing bathroom, placement of safety lightning and associated pedestrian paths from the existing parking lot to the proposed restroom. The facility is adjacent to El Dorado Beach, a lake access recreation area that presents the first look at Lake Tahoe for people traveling eastbound on Highway 50.

Grant and loan applications are submitted to the California Department of Boating and Waterways and funding for approved projects is derived from the taxes paid by boaters on the purchase of vessel gasoline and the repayment of principal and interest on department-made loans.

The department provides grants to a county, city, district or other public agency for the construction of small craft boating launching facilities and loans to local agencies for the construction of small craft harbors. These grants and loans require the consent of the seven-member Boating and Waterways Commission.
