Boating and Waterways Commission to Consider $6.372 Million for Boating Facilities June 12

SACRAMENTO--The California Boating and Waterways Commission will meet June 12 in Petaluma to consider $6.372 million in boating facility improvement grants and loans.

The meeting is open to the public and will convene at 8:30 a.m. at the Sheraton Hotel , 745 Baywood Drive, in Petaluma.  Other topics of discussion will include the Department of Boating and Waterway’s boating safety, accidents and aquatic weed control programs. The proposed grant and loan recipients are:

Colusa Boat Launching Facility, Sacramento River  -- City of Colusa
The commission will consider a $340,000 grant to fund a study which will determine the feasibility of moving forward with the construction of a new Colusa boat launching facility and identify the appropriate scope and estimated cost for such a potential future project.  The preliminary cost estimate for the entire project, which is not being considered at this time, is $2.4 million.

Knights Landing Boat Launching Facility, Sacramento River — Yolo County
The commission will consider a $732,000 grant to Yolo County for improvements to the Knights Landing boat launching facility.  The proposed project includes widening the existing ramp to accommodate boarding floats; installing two new boarding floats; adding slope protection, electrical, lightning and a potable water system; and constructing sidewalks, a turnaround and restroom,  and a project and directional sign.

San Francisco Marina— San Francisco City/County
The commission will consider two proposals.  The first is to approve a loan in the amount of $5.3 million to fund improvements to the San Francisco Marina West Harbor.  The second is to transfer $500,000 in loan funds already approved for the East Harbor project to the West Harbor project.  The proposed project consists of demolition of existing berths and construction of reconfigured berths in the West Harbor; upgrading of electrical and water dock utilities; installation of new barrier-free access gangways with security gates; construction of a new breakwater; replacement of revetment; mole removal; dredging; and improvement of buildings.  The Boating and Waterways Commission has consented to loans totaling $11.2 million to the City/County for the San Francisco Marina West Harbor project.

Grant and loan applications are submitted to the California Department of Boating and Waterways and funding for approved projects is derived from the taxes paid by boaters on the purchase of vessel gasoline and the repayment of principal and interest on department-made loans.

The department provides grants to a county, city, district or other public agency for the construction of small craft boating launching facilities and loans to local agencies for the construction of small craft harbors.  These grants and loans require the consent of the seven-member Boating and Waterways Commission.
