Lakes and Reservoirs Appreciation Week
July 1 - 7, 2005
After a period of low water levels, many of California’s lakes and reservoirs are full or nearly full just in time for summer recreation.
The Department of Boating and Waterways has joined the Department of Water Resources to highlight the contributions of our lakes and reservoirs.
Lakes and reservoirs provide a stable, clean water supply, irrigation, hydroelectric generation and flood control. As recreation areas, they also offer opportunities for tent and RV camping, boating, fishing, swimming, waterskiing, horseback riding, picnicking, hiking and other outdoor activities.
In 2001, the California Assembly set aside the week of July 4th each year to recognize the important contributions made by the State’s major lakes and reservoirs.
This year, California Lakes and Reservoirs Appreciation Week focuses on clean water. Humans and wildlife benefit from good quality water.
CARE to protect water quality:
Chemicals such as oil and cleaning products don’t belong in the water
Admire but don't disturb wildlife and wildlife habitats
Recreate but don't pollute the water you play in
Educate others about keeping lakes and reservoirs clean
Promotional flyers and wristbands designed to highlight the week and educate water users will be distributed at California state parks and reservoirs operated by the Department of Water Resources, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and Bureau of Reclamation.
