Commissioner Warren E. Rupf

Commissioner Ed RenoWarren E. Rupf, Sheriff-Coroner of Contra Costa County, was appointed to the Commission by Governor Pete Wilson to serve a four-year term from 1997-2001. He was re-appointed to the Commission by Governor Gray Davis to serve another four-year term from 2001-05 and reappointed to another term in 2006.   He is a graduate of the National Executive Institute and the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy.

Rupf served in the United States Marine Corps from 1961 to 1965.  In  November of 1965 he began work as a Deputy Sheriff in the Office of the Sheriff, Contra Costa County and served in virtually every rank in assignments throughout the office.  In 1979 he was appointed Assistant Sheriff and worked in that capacity until his appointment as Sheriff in December, 1992. On March 5, 2002, he was re-elected to a third four-year term beginning January 2003.  He is currently responsible for an urban law enforcement agency of over 1,200 employees and a budget of $170 million.  The Department functions include patrol of the unincorporated areas of the County; Police Management Services for five contract cities within the County; three detention facilities; Investigation; Coroner; Communications; Criminalistics Laboratory; Court Security and the Office of Emergency Services.

Sheriff Rupf is active in many law enforcement and community service organizations.  He is a member of the California State Sheriffs' Association, serving on their Board of Directors and as President in 2002; Contra Costa County Police Chiefs’ Association; National Sheriffs’ Association, serving as the Vice Chair of Marine/Water Safety Committee; Bay Counties Peace Officers' Association, serving as President in1995 and 1996; Contra Costa County Peace Officers' Association; Contra Costa Community College District Administration of Justice Advisory Committee; Governor's Task Force to Review Juvenile Crime and the Juvenile Justice Response; Governor’s Emergency Response Training Advisory Committee; Airborne Law Enforcement Association; California Peace Officers Association; Rotary International; and the American Legion.

He serves as the President of the Board of Directors, Micki Rainey Scholarship Fund; past Director of St. Mary's College-County Scholarship Fund; past member Board of Directors, Suicide & Crisis Intervention; past member Contra Costa County District Fair Board of Directors; and active supporter of Boy Scouts of America.
