Commissioner Robert Y. Nagata

Robert Y. Nagata, Of Counsel to the law firm Lamb & Kawakami, LLP, was appointed by Governor Gray Davis to serve a three-year term from 1999-2002. He was re-appointed by Governor Gray Davis to serve a four-year term from 2002-06. Mr. Nagata is a graduate of University of Southern California, University of San Diego School of Law and Golden Gate University’s Master of Taxation program.

Mr. Nagata started his career in 1970 as a tax accountant for Price Waterhouse and Company. He has practiced tax and corporate law since 1973. He was certified as a taxation specialist by the California State Bar Board of Legal Specialization in 1977. Mr. Nagata has also been a partner with the international law firm of Jones, Day, Reavis & Pogue as well as a partner with the Los Angeles law firm of Musick, Peeler & Garrett.

Mr. Nagata has always had a keen interest in boating, as he has owned his own boat since 1977. In 1987 he earned a United States Coast Guard license to operate uninspected small passenger vessels and has continuously maintained that license to the present.
