Biological Impacts Analysis - CSMW analyzed environmental impacts associated with sediment management projects, and developed recommendations to protect sensitive biota and habitats during project implementation. The major products from this study include a draft BIA Report and associated Abbreviated User's Guide, Resource Protection Guidelines, and a Workplan to implement recommendations. These documents are currently awaiting peer review.
Coastal RSM Plans - CSMW is working with various regional partners along the California coast to develop strategies to address coastal erosion through beneficial reuse of clean sediment from within that region. Four plans have been completed (as of June 2013), with five others being prepared and others under consideration.
Spatial Data Website and Database CSMW has compiled an extensive database containing both statewide and regionally-based spatial information layers relevant to sediment management. They have developed a third-generation viewer to simultaneously display various layers compiled by CSMW, as well as additional layers and GIS servers indentified as relevant in their GIS Users Survey . Website users can also download CSMW layers to their own computer.
Coastal References Searchable Database - CSMW has compiled an extensive database of coastal references relative to sediment management. The database can be searched by pre-defined categories as well as by author, title and region. CSMW continues to augment the database with references collected during various Coastal RSM Plan preparations.
Southern Monterey Bay Sand Management Plan – CSMW is working with the City of Monterey to develop a Sand Compatibility and Opportunistic Use Program (SCOUP) to help the southern Monterey Bay region maintain beach widths through beneficial reuse of upland and coastal sediment. The SCOUP effort was a major recommendation of the Coastal RSM Plan prepared for southern Monterey Bay. A Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) will be prepared to address environmental issues associated with the program. The City of Monterey will develop the SCOUP and MND in concert with the other cities within the region to maintain a regional focus.
Orange County Sand Management Plan – CSMW is working with the Orange County Parks to develop a Sand Compatibility and Opportunistic Use Program (SCOUP) to help the Orange County/Newport Bay region maintain beach widths through beneficial reuse of upland and coastal sediment. The SCOUP effort was a major recommendation of the Coastal RSM Plan prepared for the Orange County Coastline. A Mitigated Negative Declaration (MND) will be prepared to address environmental issues associated with the program.
Surfers Beach and Pillar Point Harbor - CSMW is part of a stakeholder workgroup, which includes USACE, NOAA Sanctuaries, the San Mateo County Harbor District, recreational beach users, and other stakeholder groups striving to find ways to address coastal erosion at Surfers Beach (aka El Granada Beach) in Half Moon Bay. The workgroup's current focus is to determine how sediment accumulating inside the adjacent Pillar Point Harbor could be beneficially reused at Surfer's Beach, given strict regulatory limitations on the placement of dredged materials within the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.
TMDL development – CSMW is working closely with the State and Regional Water Quality Control Boards to facilitate the fluvial transport of coarse sediment needed to replenish coastal beaches while keeping fine-grained sediment contained so that it does not result in adverse impacts to fluvial, riparian or coastal habitats. NOAA Sanctuaries – CSMW and NOAA are working together to develop approaches that would allow for environmentally-sensitive sediment management activities within the boundaries of the Monterey Bay and Gulf of the Farrallones National Marine Sanctuaries.
Depth of Closure – CSMW is working with the USEPA, a workgroup member, to assess the merits associated with various definitions of depth of closure. The chosen definition will influence the USEPA’s determination of whether individual dredge-placement projects are beneficially reusing sediment or conducting disposal activities.
Fine-grained sediment - CSMW supports research, demonstration projects, and science transfer regarding the sources and dispersal of fine-grained sediment in the coastal near shore. Communicating the results and implementing the findings, including assessing beneficial reuse options, will allow for more efficient sediment management along the California coast.
