National Safe Boating Week Kickoff at Marina del Rey
The Division of Boating and Waterways and the National Safe Boating Council co-sponsored a kickoff event in celebration of National Safe Boating Week in Marina del Rey on May 16, 2003.
Among the honored speakers was Secretary for Resources, Mary D. Nichols who presented DBW Director with Governor Gray Davis' proclamation of National Safe Boating Week.
Locally, the event was co-sponsored by the Department of Beaches and Harbors and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, who worked very hard to make sure the event was successful.
DBW's aquatic safety puppet show was a big hit with attending children, and the crowd was thrilled with a staged jet helicopter and watercraft rescues of distressed boaters.
The event was attended by the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the U.S. Power Squadrons, who staffed booths with safety information. Together, participating groups helped give out 100 free life jackets to boaters.
Several local radio stations also participated, sponsoring a contests and prizes including a chance to win a boat, and hosting two Los Angeles Laker Girls who signed autographs.
